Starting a new job can be quite stressful and exciting at the same time. Here's how to prepare yourself the best way possible for this amazing change in your life.

Changing jobs is an important part in career development and personal growth. It may not be something you necessarily enjoy doing, but you know it’s inevitable when things start getting stagnant and boring.

If not, you’ll end up in the same dead-end job, doing the same thing you do day in and day out. However, before you start dreading the process, remember all the benefits that go along with starting something brand new.

It’s a new beginning, which means you need to celebrate. Sure, there will be challenges along the way, and you may need to overcome a few hurdles in order to become the successful, independent woman you aspire to be. Just remember, being prepared is what’s going to help you overcome some of those hurdles – whether they take place in your mind or physical appearance.

So while you’re on your way to success, why not implement the following seven useful tips to prepare you for starting a new job:

1. Choose a new hairstyle

Nothing screams a new beginning like a new hairstyle. Sure, change can be scary – especially if it involves cutting off your hair. However, the good news is, it’ll grow back. Remember to keep it professional if you’re entering a professional setting, or don’t if you just don’t care. The key to a new hairstyle is doing it for the right reasons. It’s true what they say, a change is as good as a holiday!

2. Get your nails done

If you’re going to be working with a keyboard you may want to evaluate the state of your nails. This doesn’t mean you have to choose fake or choose a nail polish color that’s completely out of your comfort zone, but it’s definitely a good idea to neaten your cuticles and go for a ‘clean’ look. Trust me, you won’t regret it when all eyes are on your hands.

3. Practice your skills

Being prepared is important, not only for calming your nerves but to give your new employer confirmation that s/he made the right choice when hiring you. So if possible, practice your skills before starting your new job – ensuring you know exactly what you’re doing without feeling like a dummy on your first day.

4. Learn something new

Remember, there will always be something new to learn, so don’t be afraid. People rarely know every aspect of a new job, which is why there’s normally a settle-in period for you to get used to your surroundings and job specs. Always be open to new challenges. It’s the only way you’ll grow and improve your existing skills.

5. Purchase a new first-day outfit

Make an excellent first impression on your first at the new job by going on a little shopping spree. You don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune – especially if you know where to shop. However, I can guarantee you’ll feel like a million bucks in a new outfit, which will add to your confidence levels. See it as a reward for having the courage to start a new journey. It may be scary at first, but anything is achievable with brand new pair of high heels.

6. Remember why they chose you

There’s a reason why they chose you instead of one of the hundreds of other candidates that applied.
They saw something in you that they clearly didn’t see in anyone else. So remember that the next time you doubt your skills and abilities. It’s normal to have a little bit of self-doubt when embarking on a new adventure but don’t let that stop you from grabbing the opportunity with both hands.

7. Prepare your comfort zone

Make sure you have all the little things you’ll need before your first day. It’s important to have your ‘comfort zone’ set up – especially if you feel more comfortable having your things around. So if at all possible, purchase a few things for your desk (if you have one) that represent you. Invest in a new pen, or even colorful sticky notes. Make your mark by owning your space in the office. You’ll fit in in no time, allowing you to do your job better and focus on what’s important – furthering your career.

See this opportunity as a brand new challenge, with so many possibilities. I believe everything happens for a reason, and opportunities come to you in order to help you grow – not only professionally but as a human being. After all, the last thing you want to become is stagnant – which is exactly what happens if you spend years in the same position, at the same company. It’s important to spread your wings every once in a while and seek out new opportunities.

So remember to show up on your first day with confidence, poise, and a willingness to learn. You’ll never know everything there is to know, and if you’re smart enough, you’ll seek individuals to look up to – who can fill those important gaps often filled by ego. It may be scary and somewhat intimidating to be the ‘new person’, but before you know it, you’ll be like a well-oil machine. Don’t let something like a new beginning stop you from being all you were created to be.
