5 Ways to Change Career When you have No Idea What you Want to Do

You know you want to change career because what you’re doing right now just isn’t you. It doesn’t feel right, it doesn’t excite you and, to be honest, you actually hate it. But when you think about changing career you’re hit by a complete blank – you just don’t know what your next career looks like. And that can feel kind of scary.

Don’t Panic!

Fear can lead to paralysis which in turn can leave you stuck where you are for longer than you want to be. Take a deep breath and start breaking things down into what you can do to move forward.

Follow your Instincts

You know in your heart what is right for you. Your instinct is a really good barometer of whether you are on the right path or not. Let your instinct guide you on what you know brings out the best in you and allows you to thrive.

Find your (support) Tribe

Don’t be lonely on your career change journey – you’re going to need all the help you can get. Look out for trusted people who can take on the following roles:
  • your sounding board
  • your cheerleader
  • your networking buddy
Also scan your tribe for contacts to talk to as part of your research.

Become a Detective

Trying to work out your next career will mean looking for clues from your home and working life about what you enjoy and what interests you. Start doing forensic research on areas that draw your curiosity. Look for themes -think about what books, magazines you enjoy reading, what TV programmes or film genres you’re attracted by, consider whose job you envy or ask other people what they see you doing.

Be experimental

Try out some things in your spare time by  volunteering, or at work by shadowing someone or taking on a piece of work you haven’t done before. Be open to possibility – take on an interim or contract role in a different sector of company and notice what you like and don’t like.

Don’t worry about being at a career crossroads without a map, just enjoy exploring and identifying what you need and want from a career.  Your final destination will emerge as you learn more about yourself.
