YOU AND YOUR EYES

Image
“Good morning, Doctor. How is life treating you?” “Good morning, Ladi. How is madam and the children?” “They are fine. Sorry, Doctor, please, I was told you are an optometrist. I am just hearing that for the first time. Is it the same as optician or ophthalmologist?” “Well, well, the optician, optometrist and the ophthalmologist are all eye care professionals, treating and maintaining the eye (vision and sight), complementing one another for the good of the patients.” “The optician is someone trained to grind and fix lenses into frames. He is a technician, who in the real sense has no business diagnosing diseases of the eye. He is not trained to test the eyes in any way. He simply receives prescription from the optometrist, ophthalmologist and patients to fix correctly into glasses. He also repairs damaged frames and advises patients on which frame shape best fits his/her face. He may be described as a face architect or Engineer. The optometrist is a trained professi

HUMANBEING NOT HUMANBEEN

Image
Written by:     HANNAH UDOBIA Sola has always performed excellently in all her presentations as the creative director of Flames Advertising Agency. Whatever project she touches turns to gold and this has helped increased the company’s financial base from what it used to be. The 13 th  of November was not going to be different; her company was depending on her to win the million dollar contract, this was going to make her promotion rapid.  Sola walked in with confidence into the board room to work her magic but unfortunately after the presentation the look on the clients face was one of dissatisfaction. They whispered amongst themselves and came to a conclusion that the agency will not be able to represent their interest formidably. Sola went home distressed and could hardly sleep, where did it go all wrong? What would the company think of me? A failure maybe, I’m such a loser, she thought. So she made up her mind to resign from the agency because sh

By: Professor Stephen Onu.                 Are you thinking of starting your own business venture? Entrepreneurship can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience with an opportunity to be your own boss, set your own agenda and schedule, and make a decent living doing something you enjoy. READY FOR A LIFT?

Image
READY FOR A LIFT? Whether you are already an inventor at ten or still a fool at forty or you are somewhere in between, one thing is sure; you are tired of living in the past and crave for new experiences. You are tired either of basking in the euphoria of your successes or drowning in the sea of your past mistakes and failures. To make that positive change in your career, finances, relationships, social life and ministry, you must transform your own life first. If you place the cart before the horse, you will not move. Build yourself before trying to build a business, career or relationship and grow up first before trying to grow your income.

MEDICAL CHECK UP

Image
By Dr Odofin James Taiye. Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being of an individual and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity. This is the working definition from World Health Organization(WHO),though it is associated with controversy. Prevention of disease is definitely better than cure. This will be possible from avoiding the predisposition to disease, disability and even death. Therefore, adopting a healthy lifestyle and avoidance of harmful cultural practices might at least serve as primary prevention of certain diseases. The healthy behavioural pattern should be maintained and sustained for a long time to be meaningful and effective. In the presence of pre-diseased condition, early recognition and prompt quality treatment will nib the supposed disease in the bud and possibly remove its trace from the body. This is achievable by cultivating the culture of routine medical check up.

THE REAL MAD PEOPLE: NOW ENDANGERED PEOPLE

Image
Dr odofin James Taiye Who will warn the real mad people in the our streets that they are now at risk of being lynched  at the slightest provocation? Will they even understand your message in clear terms? Who would explain to them in their ‘language’ that the host community they roamed freely before is now hostile, and suspicious of their anti-social behaviours? All these are difficult since our public is not well educated in the concept of mental ill-health. It is definitely a hard time for the real mentally disordered people roaming our streets nowadays. They are now endangered ‘species’ considering the onslaught being meted out to them in the streets. The mentally sick and the normal people are now at risk in the streets. Unfortunately, the former, cannot be warned to stay off the streets. The discovery of Soka Forest in Ibadan, Oyo State, South-West Nigeria, a  few months back, had drastically changed people’s perception to the detriment of the mentally sick in

PROFESSIONAL TEACHER

Image
HANNAH UDOBIA   ‘‘Do you have any plans after this senior year final exams’’, asked Femi. ‘‘Yes I do’’, said Kenneth, ‘‘I plan to work in a school, you know it is the easiest job around and considering the fact that it gives you time to leave the premises to focus on other businesses’’. ‘‘I should consider towing that line too, after all it is just to teach and mark some few notebooks’’, said Femi.  Some people want to be teachers because it’s often perceived as the easiest job to make money after secondary school, while some view it as a good venture to invest some millions of naira after retirement even when they do not understand what the rudiment of education is about. This is why most school principals’ employs mediocre instead of professional teachers because of their myopic knowledge of how a professional system of education should run.

BANKER TURNED HAIRSTYLIST

Image
-          My  Career Drive Peak Pathway Magazine Press Crew had an exclusive interview with the CEO, Bruno’s Place (BRUNO OAIKHINAN) who left Banking job to become a hairstylist. Says ‘My wife did not support me when I dumped over half a million Naira monthly pay for hairstyling’       1.       PPM : Can we meet you sir?                BRUNO : My name is Bruno but I'm not a dog. I remember back in the days how I used to be offended when people tell me my name is a dog’s name. But now I'm wiser because I found out that I was once a ‘dog’ but I have been converted. I'm now a god born of the Almighty God. I might be bearing a dog’s name but I'm a god in the inner man. 2.         PPM: When and where did you start your career? BRUNO: I used to be a banker with over nine years experience in the banking sector. I left Skye Bank in 2011 as head, Internal Communications Unit. Today, I'm a proud hairstylist and an entrepreneur providing a pla

IN DEPTH LEARNING

Image
Dunmoye Femi        Students across the globe have different systems or methods which they use to read or study. For example, ‘uploading and downloading’ is one of the ways one can read. This is contrary to an ideal method of reading: In-depth learning. This is very effective and will be discussed here further.             In-depth learning means learning as much as possible about a particular topic. In-depth learning brings a clear picture between reading and studying. The in-depth learning enhances the reading for the sake of knowledge and understanding, and not only for the sake of passing a test with high grades or trying to impress people.             This takes me back to the memory lane. When I was doing my Diploma course at Kwara State Polytechnics,Ilorin. The system of reading by many students was ‘cramming’ when going to the examination hall or a few days to the exams. After the exams, if you ask from such students about what they have read, they would

Stage Fright

Image
By : Michael Igele ACT 1 SCENE 1 John, a final year student of University of Benin has been preparing for a seminar presentation. He has wondered how to overcome stage fright. The topic is very familiar to him and he believes he can do well but for stage fright. ACT 1 SCENE 1 Enter  John :    Good morning sir! Pharmacist : Good morning young man, how can I help you? John :        Please sir, I am presenting a seminar this afternoon, do you have any drug that can suppress stage fright? Pharmacist :   There are no such drugs except hard drugs which I do not sell, but strictly on prescription by the Doctor. You mean you don’t know what to do to overcome stage frights? So you just go to school without anything in your head. All you do is to read all the way but still leave empty space in your brain. When I was in school, I knew what to do. What everybody does including your professors and doctors before going for lectures. John :                     (covered by curios

EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS

Image
By: Kayode Ariba (LSS Black belt) Ola graduated from one of the best Universities in Nigeria. He was even the best graduating student in his department. Having graduated with a Second Class Upper Division (2-1), he strongly believed, getting a job will never be his problem. But to his amazement, he searched for a job for years but could not get any.  He was frustrated after many attempts, so he concluded; he must have been bewitched in his home town, forgetting the fact that it is one thing to graduate with a good grade and another thing to be employable. One day, he woke very early in the Morning and decided to take a walk in his neighborhood just to kill time, rather than thinking about his predicament. On his way back home, he was nearly hit by a car because he was lost in thought, thinking about his state of joblessness. The owner of the car turned out to be his old time friend, now a branch Manager of a reputable Organization in Nigeria.  ”Ola, what’s wrong with you?”
