LEADERSHIP

It is easier to say, “Readers are Leaders”, I’d rather go with “Leaders are Readers” and I could even add, “Thinkers are Leaders” or “doers are Leaders” unfortunately, not all that “do” eventually are worthy of emulation. There is a school of thought, “do as I say, don’t do as I do”. The cliché is most times used by the supposed “leaders” at any level in the society. This shows how misappropriated the word “leader” is in our today’s world.

It is worthy of note that at some points in our day to day lives, most of us, in some way, assume some leadership posts. “Political leaders” are not the only kind of leaders there are in society. For instance, the family, typically, is the smallest unit of the society and it; basically, consist of the father, mother, and the children where the father assumes the leader; followed by the mother who is also a leader and even amongst the children, there are leaders. Therefore, defining the word, “leadership”, it is the ability to take up responsibility; being responsible for others.

“Leaders are born not made” is a controversial discussion however, there have been some notable facts to prove this ideology true, it is yet a half-truth because that is not all there is to leadership. When a “leader” is born, he needs to be nurtured carefully in line with his predestination. If our society does not endeavor to stop ill-treating the so-called “born leaders”, we would not stop having good motorists with their “conductors” instead of good and sound pilots; skillful and intelligent armed robbers instead of skillful and intelligent officers of the law. A leader of the law could end up as a leader of an armed robbery gang depending on whom he chooses to follow. A “predestined” leader of the law could turn out to be a leader of an armed robbery gang depending on whom he chooses to follow.

Qualities of a good leader;
• Courage: does not hide from challenging or scary situations; speak up for what is right even if there is opposition
• Creativity: thinks of different ways to solve challenges
• Loyalty: stays true to friends and family or team members through difficult times
• Honesty: speaks truthfully; acts sincerely
• Self-regulation: controls emotions and sticks to decisions; is disciplined
• Forgiveness: accepts shortcomings of others without anger: fives people second chance
• Compassion: thinks of how others feel
• Intelligence: learns quickly and thinks of a good solution; has a love of learning
• Determination: focuses on goals and works hard to achieve them
• Fairness: treats people fairly and advocates for their rights; doesn’t let personal feelings bias decisions.
Remember, everyone, at some points, would become a leader, what matters is the kind of leader we choose to be. Will you fit into the norms or dare to stand out? The world needs you to take up responsibility and contribute your quota to the society. Remain blessed and strong!
